My first Interview Experience

Hi everyone, I am Krish Jaiman. In this blog, I am going to share my first interview experience and what I learnt from that experience.

I am an engineering student and to build a strong resume, I was looking for some internships. Basically, I am data science and AI-ML enthusiast and want to work in this field. If you want a guide to start your data science career, I will be writing on it very soon, so stay tuned.

So, yeah, I was looking for an internship in winters around December 2024. I was just applying everywhere I saw an opening. I just desperately needed one intern role. I applied on LinkedIn, Internshala and other platforms. I was able to get one shortlist finally. I was very happy, as if, I got the intern sure shot. But that was not the case, even, I failed to get that role finally.

Let's come to the interview procedure. The interview procedure consists of two rounds-1) Telephonic Interview Round and 2) Google Meet Interview. My telephonic interview call was scheduled from 1 PM-5PM. I was waiting for call but didn't get any. I was sad. Later, I received a message that my telephonic interview round has been rescheduled as they could not reach out to me due to network issues. ahh…, like the worst possible thing which can happen, isn't it?

So, next day, I finally get the call. I was not well prepared with all my basics of data science because I was just enjoying my vacations at home. I ignored revision even though I had an interview scheduled. This costed me the internship basically. Although, I managed to make it through the first round, but I clearly felt the need of revision.

First Round

In first round I was asked to brief about my educational qualifications and then we had a small chat about project I have worked upon. He asked me about the challenges I faced in that project and how I solved it? Then he started asking me questions regarding data analysis. He started questioning how I will deal with missing values and some basic Pandas questions and finally basic ML stuff. I was able to answer all these questions easily. Still, I realized the need of revision. Finally, the round ended.

Next day, I was told that I have cleared first round. I was much happier. I had my second round scheduled in five minutes.

Second Round

In the second round, it was just similar to first round with only difference being in this round I was asked comparatively difficult questions. I was asked about Bias- Variance tradeoff and Regularization, L1 and L2 Regularizations, Type 1 and Type 2 errors. I answered all these questions but was not very comfortable while answering. I don't know whether I was nervous or what. Also, as I said, because of lack of revisions, I was unclear about a few things asked. This drained my confidence. Finally, the round concluded, and I was not selected as I expected.

Learnings

From my first interview experience, I learnt that I should revise my concepts before every single interview. It just would simply give me more confidence and help me clear interviews.

So, this was my first interview experience and my learnings.
